"The Ultimate Basketball Training Hack: How Cognitive Motor Dual-Task Training Can Improve Your Decision-Making and Reaction Time"

What is Cognitive Motor Dual Task Training?

Cognitive-motor dual-task training is a type of training that involves combining cognitive tasks with motor tasks. The purpose of this type of training is to challenge an individual's ability to perform both tasks simultaneously, which can improve their overall performance in complex tasks that require both cognitive and motor skills.

In cognitive-motor dual-task training, an individual is required to perform a motor task (such as dribbling a basketball) while also completing a cognitive task (such as solving a math problem or responding to visual stimuli). The cognitive task can be designed to challenge the individual's attention, decision-making, or working memory, which can improve their ability to perform under pressure and in complex situations.

This type of training is commonly used in sports performance training, as it can help athletes improve their ability to make quick decisions and react to changing situations in real-time. It can also be used in rehabilitation settings to help individuals recover from injuries or neurological conditions that affect both cognitive and motor skills.

A recent study published in 2023 tested the effectiveness of cognitive motor dual task training.

Here is a breakdown of the research study titled "Specific effect of a cognitive-motor dual-task training on sport performance and brain processing associated with decision-making in semi-elite basketball players":

1. Research question: The study aimed to investigate the specific effect of a cognitive-motor dual-task training on sport performance and brain processing associated with decision-making in semi-elite basketball players.

2. Methods: The study used a randomized controlled trial design with two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received a six-week cognitive-motor dual-task training program, while the control group received no training. The training program consisted of basketball-specific motor tasks combined with cognitive tasks designed to challenge decision-making abilities. Pre- and post-training assessments were conducted on both groups to measure sport performance and brain processing associated with decision-making. The assessments included tests of basketball skills, reaction time, and electroencephalography (EEG) recordings during decision-making tasks.

3. Findings: The study found that the cognitive-motor dual-task training program led to significant improvements in sport performance and brain processing associated with decision-making in the experimental group compared to the control group. Specifically, the experimental group showed improvements in basketball skills such as shooting accuracy, and faster reaction times during decision-making tasks. EEG recordings also showed increased activity in brain regions associated with attention and decision-making in the experimental group.

Overall, the study suggests that a cognitive-motor dual-task training program can have a specific positive effect on sport performance and brain processing associated with decision-making in semi-elite basketball players.

About Neuro Beast

After extensive research and consultation with leading neuroscientists, optometrists, and sports psychologists, the Neuro Beast Method was created. Its goal is to give athletes a competitive edge by optimizing their brain function.

The Neuro Beast Method focuses on improving cognitive functions specific to each sport, such as attention, reaction time, memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility. It also addresses mental fatigue and enhances skill acquisition.

The Neuro Beast Method also provides education on the psychological skills necessary for success in sports and life, such as confidence and resiliency.

The program has yielded significant results for professional athletes in the MLB, NFL, and NBA, as well as collegiate and youth athletes. The team behind Neuro Beast is dedicated to helping athletes reach their full potential and get "Wired to Win."

In the video below I show an easy way to incorporate cognitive motor dual task training into a practice or pregame routine.
